Pedals, Pipes, and Pizza!
A Free, Hands-On Introduction
to the “King of Instruments”
The New Haven Chapter of the American Guild of Organists invites young pianists, ages 8-18, to a fun day of exploring the “King of Instruments,” the pipe organ. The event will take place on Saturday, March 14, 2020, from 9am-1pm in New Haven, CT. We will start at Bethesda Lutheran Church (450 Whitney Avenue), walk to Marquand Chapel at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music (409 Prospect St), where we will get to meet up close with the beautiful Taylor and Boody organ, returning to Bethesda Lutheran for a pizza lunch together. There is no cost to attend! Students need to sign up by calling 203-671-9393 or emailing  by March 13.
For centuries, the organ was the largest and most complicated machinery invented by humans. The instrument still fascinates students and music lovers of all ages with its thousands of pipes and rich pallet of musical colors. Students will get to listen to demonstrations of three majestic pipe organs. They will also receive individual time, with a coach, to explore one of the instruments. Students can bring pieces they have studied on the piano and can try those out on the organ. Expert teachers and organ technicians from the organist guild will volunteer their time to demonstrate how organs work and how they are played. The day will end with a free pizza lunch. Piano teachers in the greater New Haven area are encouraged to let their students know about this opportunity to learn about another family of keyboard instruments!
The mission of the American Guild of Organists is to enrich lives through organ and choral music. To achieve this, we:
